Harry Potter etc

I've heard a lot of talk about the latest Harry Potter book and the whole Harry Potter phenomenon in general this week. I can't comment on the books because I've never read one but the people I know that have enjoy them. Likewise with the films. I've never read any of the books or seen any of the films because it's not the sort of thing that I am in to. I never liked the Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings either.
I've heard it said that the later Harry Potter books aren't as good as the earlier ones and they only sell because of the hype surrounding them, but as I've already pointed out I'm not qualified to comment on that.
What I will say is that who amongst us would not like even a tiny piece of the success that J K Rowling has had from the writing of this series of books. I'll tell you right now that I would.

Hear hear! Personally I hate the fact that a lot of writers look down on JKR. We should be cheering those who've made it past the slush pile, not rubbishing them.

I also think the later books are better. The first book is very definitely a children's story. As Harry matures, so do the themes of the books. I was put off by the hype at first, and I still get annoyed by it. I try to judge the books alone, and not by the promo stories that appear in the media.

The hype is enormous but that's not JKR's fault. Good luck to her I say.

I love the books. They may not be Booker-prize winning prose, but they don't half get you turning the pages, and that, after all, is what a book should do.

I don't think I've read many books that would win the Booker prize but I have read some damn good books. Like you say, that's what it's all about.
