I was reading an article while I was in the bath about lulu.com and I wondered if anyone had any experience of it. I know that Sally has used it and I was curious if anyone else had and what they thought about it.
I used it to make my dad's Christmas present last year. He'd written about 25 pages of his 'autobiography', complete with photos pasted into Word so I formatted it, proof-read it, designed a cover and uploaded it to lulu. A couple of weeks later and there they were on my doormat - 5 copies of my dad's 'autobiography'. I don't think I'd ever seen him more delighted on Christmas Day :o)
I had absolutely no problems at all with lulu and would definitely use them again (maybe, at some point, to create an anthology of my published/prize winning stories so I've got them all in one place).
That's interesting calistro. I love the idea of what you did for your dad. What a fantastic present. I'd never thought of using lulu until I read the article. Now I'm thinking maybe.
I've never used a PoD service but most people who have seem to think Lulu is okay. I would definitely steer clear of some of the less well-known ones though, there are many cowboys and con-artists out there. Writer Beware blog is good for checking these, though it tends to focus on American scams.
Even Amazon's PoD business practises have come under scrutiny in recent months, but as far as I know Lulu is okay.
Thanks for the warning captain. Its not something that I've given serious consideration to but when I read about it I realised how little I knew about it and I wanted to know more. I've used the Writer Beware blog before and it is very good. The publishing house that I was checking up on was in the US so it was perfect for my needs.
I know a couple of other people who've used Lulu and been happy with it. One published a novel, after being warned away from the scam that is PublishAmerica. The other published a book of children's stories her mother had written, for her mum and her kids to enjoy. I've heard nothing bad about Lulu, as long as you aren't expecting to become a bestseller from a Lulu publication.
I don't think that I would use lulu or something similar unless it was for a personal project like your friend's or like cally's Christmas present to her father. I think that I would stll rather someone else publish my book rather than me.
