The production line

I've managed one new short story this week, well in the draft form at least. On a good week I might manage two. I was wondering what the average is amongst you guys. Also if any of you use writing as your main source of income, how much do you produce a week? I am seriously impressed by anyone who uses writing as their main source of income. If I did we would be in a lot of trouble. Maybe one day.

Hey, I sadly do not use writing as my main income but have a nice flexible jobs which gives me time to write. I usually manage about 3 complete stories a month but they range from 500-2600 words in length!

I write approximately 700 words a day, on various projects, for about five days a week. Of that, only one piece could be classed as a short story, as I'm mostly working on longer things.

I'm a believer in the "work smarter, not harder" philosophy, so my rate of output is not that great. I'm still trying to learn as much as I can about the craft.

Definitely not a source of income of any kind. One day perhaps...

Definitely not my major source of income. I have a full time job, two school age kids, a house which needs endless DIY and a midlife crisis which is making me go out and run/circuit train/swim at every opportunity. So not a lot of time to write.

I aim to write 2 a month, preferably 3. Am just about managing that at the moment but I have a backlog of stories needing major edits.

You and I could be twins womag except my kids are now in their
20's and i don't hold with that excercise nonsense. I'll have months when I write loads and loads and then the next month maybe just one story/article. I guess it averages itself over the year to about 3 a month. I know hat if it was my main source of income I would have to produce a lot more. Wonder how much Della does - maybe I'll ask her.

I'm also only a 2 or 3 a month person. I am amazed by Della Galton and other writers who appear so often in the womens' mags that I really wonder how they manage their incredible output of stories.

I think it's probably down to the fact that writing is how Della earns her living (I think) I don't know about you but I have to fit it around a 9 - 5.30 job. I used to beat myself up about it but not any more.
