A very small crumb of comfort

I had a short story rejected this week which is always disappointing. They'd had that particular story for about 3 weeks but they still have one that I sent almost 3 months ago so I'm hoping for more from that. At least it was something back from an editor. I'd started to think that the post office were tossing everything in the bin rather than delivering them where I sent them. It had been ages since I heard about anything so I took small (very small) comfort from this.
I find the waiting very difficult and in some ways worse than rejection. Okay I know that no news is good news and while you're waiting to hear about something there's still hope for it but if something is going to be rejected I'd rather just know so that I can deal with it.

I also had a rejection this week, and two last week. Oh, the fun of it all.

I hate not knowing too.

We're in the same boat then Debs. I suspect that there aren't just two of us in it either.

No, you're not alone - I had a rejection last week (but it's already gone back out to someone else!). The wait seems to be getting longer and longer, unless it's just me. I usually send a polite enquiry after 6 months, and have had to do that twice in recent months. One of those was accepted as soon as I sent the enquiry so I'm glad I did!

All part of the 'fun' ...

I thought that the wait was getting longer but wasn't sure if I was imagining it. Looks like I might not be. Well done on selling the story that you had to chase up and fingers crossed for the one that you've sent out again.

I've had one too... I was hoping this year might be mine year for having a short story published, but I now feel as though I'm running out of time.

I know exactly what you mean Jarmara. This has been a very lean year for me with only a couple of stories accepted.

Aha - it's not just me then!

I've had my first short story rejection during the last couple of week.

Onwards and upwards...

Exactly Angel - that's the spirit. Sorry that your story was rejected but at least your story was out there.

I totally agree, Colette, that the waiting is much harder than the knowing. You have to wonder what it is with the publishing industry: is it incompetence or pure sadism? Hang on in there.

I hope it's not incompetence Lorna.
