Foreign to me.

So far I have only had work published in magazines or books that were written in English mainly in Britain and Australia. However I have come across people that have had stories published in foreign magazines from non English speaking countries and I am thinking of Sweden and Norway here and I am wondering
a) how you go about submitting to a Swedish or Norwegian magazine?
b) how do you stop them being "too English"?

I did used to have a few of my stories sold on to Scandanavian and other countries - but it was done by an agent, who actually contacted me out of the blue(this was about 15 years ago), offering to sell foreign rights in my stories for me! I was totally gob-smacked - I don't think there are any agents now doing this sort of thing, and I certainly hadn't realised any did it back then. Well she sold some to Australia, others to Norway, Sweden, Denmark & Holland -earning me a little extra each time (these were already published in the UK - she submitted the published version to the foreign magazines - and took 15% of each sale). It didn't seem a lot, and I did wonder whether it was worth her while. It was nice for me, though, and fun to receive the complementary copies with the stories translated! Are there any agents now in the Writers Handbook etc who offer handling foreign rights of short stories? Somehow I doubt it.

Good luck to you,GW. I'm sorry but I can't help you, though I would be interested to know too.

I think agents intersted in short stories are few and far between these day Olivia. Good for you though selling the stories more than once.
No probs Jarmara.
