There's a fab thread on womag's blog at the minute about what an author is worth. I wanted to make a point but I didn't want to hijack that thread so here goes.
I was paid £50 today for a 2000 word story. Some might think that this is derisory but I was quite happy with it. First of all that might be because I knew what the fee would be before I submitted. Also, when I thought about it, it took me about three hours in total to write, edit and submit that story and as an hourly rate thats darned sight better than the day job pays.

I agree. I recently accepted £50 for a short story in YOURS magazine and was thrilled. Maybe it's because I'm new to it all, but it'll be such a thrill to see my name in print I'd probably have done it for nothing!
You know, there are so many writers who get nothing for their efforts, so you've done well there and are right to be proud of it.
And to get a 2000 word story completed and subbed in 3 hours is an amazing achievement - one I can only dream of!
It wasn't 3 hours done all at once. There were a couple of sessions writing the story the another session editing and then finally the typing. It was probably spaced over a week or so. Also I was fairly ucky that it was a story that sort of flowed from my pen as it were because it was all planned in my head and I knew where I was going. Isn't it great when you have days like that. I wish I had more of them
Oh yes, me too.
